Questions worth asking at any consultation

Consultations are short. A few well-chosen questions make the difference between leaving informed and leaving with a prescription you do not understand.

Appointments move quickly, and it is common to leave one realising you never asked the thing you came in wondering about. These questions are worth keeping in mind.

About what is happening

  • What is the most likely explanation for this?
  • Is there anything you have ruled out?
  • Should this change before I come back?

About anything prescribed

  • What is this for, and how will I know it is working?
  • How long should I take it?
  • Does it interact with anything I am already taking?

About what happens next

  • What would make you want to see me sooner?
  • Do I need any tests before the next visit?

If an answer is not clear, it is reasonable to say so and ask again. A consultation has not done its job if you leave uncertain about what was decided.
